Profession
Plastic Reconstructive Surgeon
Restores function and self-esteem.
A plastic and reconstructive surgeon repairs and rebuilds the body after injury, disease, or conditions present at birth. Your days split between clinic visits, where you meet patients and plan treatment, and the operating room, where you might reconstruct a breast after cancer surgery, repair a hand injury, treat burns, or correct a cleft lip and palate. You work closely with other surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, therapists, and psychologists, in hospitals and outpatient surgical centers. Follow-up care matters as much as surgery, so you also spend time helping patients through recovery, scarring, and emotional adjustment.
