Profession
Ultrasound Physician
Images that guide rapid diagnoses
An ultrasound physician performs and interprets ultrasound examinations, using sound waves to produce images of organs, blood vessels, and developing babies. Depending on the specialty, you might scan the abdomen, heart, pelvis, thyroid, or vascular system, then explain what the images mean to patients and referring doctors. In some settings sonographers perform the scans and the physician reviews the images and signs the report, while in others the physician holds the probe. You work in clinics, hospitals, emergency departments, and imaging centers, and you decide when findings call for further tests or urgent action.
