Profession
Palliative Care Physician
Quality of life until the end.
A palliative care physician helps people with serious illness feel better and live as fully as possible, at any stage of the illness, not only at the end of life. You manage symptoms such as pain, nausea, and breathlessness, talk with patients and families about what matters most to them, help them understand their options, and coordinate with the doctors treating the underlying disease. Much of your work is conversation: difficult, honest, and compassionate. You work with nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other specialists as a team.
