Profession
Small Animal Veterinarian
Health and well-being of our companions
A small animal veterinarian cares for the health of pets, mainly dogs and cats and sometimes rabbits, birds, and other companion animals. You examine patients, listen to what owners describe, order tests like blood work and X-rays, and diagnose illnesses and injuries. You give vaccines, perform surgeries such as spays, neuters, and dental procedures, prescribe medication, and talk with families about nutrition, behavior, and end-of-life decisions. Most days are in a clinic or animal hospital, working with veterinary technicians, assistants, and front-desk staff, and moving quickly between routine visits and urgent cases.
