Profession
Firmware Engineer
Code that makes hardware work
As a firmware engineer, you write the low-level software that makes electronic devices actually work. Firmware is the code that lives inside hardware, controlling everything from smartwatches and medical devices to cars, appliances, drones, and industrial machines. Day to day, you program microcontrollers and processors, write device drivers, and make hardware and software talk to each other reliably. You work close to the metal, optimizing code to run fast in tight memory and power constraints, debugging tricky issues with oscilloscopes and specialized tools, and testing on real physical devices. You collaborate with hardware engineers and product teams, translating a circuit board's capabilities into working, dependable behavior.
