Profession
Prosecutor
It defends society and enforces the law.
A prosecutor represents the government in criminal cases. You review evidence gathered by police, decide whether to file charges, negotiate plea agreements, and, when a case goes to trial, present it to a judge or jury. You prepare witnesses, argue motions, and stay in contact with victims and law enforcement. Prosecutors work in courthouses and offices, handle heavy caseloads, and carry an ethical duty to seek justice rather than simply to win. In the United States this role is held by district attorneys, assistant district attorneys, state attorneys, and federal prosecutors known as assistant United States attorneys.
