Profession
Mathematics teacher
Make numbers understandable.
A math teacher helps students build number sense, problem-solving skills, and confidence with abstract ideas. Depending on the level, you might teach fractions to elementary students, algebra and geometry in middle or high school, or calculus and statistics at a community college or university. Your days include planning lessons, explaining ideas in several different ways, grading work, meeting with parents or advisors, and finding out why a student is stuck so you can help them move forward. You also help students handle test anxiety and the belief that they are simply not a math person, which is often the hardest part of the job.
