As a head of product, you lead a company's product strategy and the team of product managers who bring it to life. Day to day, you decide what the company should build and why, set priorities, and make sure the product team is solving the right problems for customers. You connect the product vision to the company's overall goals, hire and coach product managers, and work closely with design, engineering, and business leaders. You spend your time on strategy, reviewing plans, mentoring your team, and making the big calls about where the product is headed. This is a senior role you grow into over years. Many people have a bachelor's degree in business, engineering, computer science, or a related field, and some add an MBA, but a strong track record of building successful products matters most. You typically start as a product manager, learning how to understand users, work with engineers, and ship features, then move up to senior PM and product lead before heading the whole function. Skills in strategy, leadership, and communication all come together in this job. Heads of product work at tech companies, startups, and any business that builds and sells products, especially digital ones. As products become central to how companies compete, these leadership roles have become more important. Most people climb from product manager to senior PM to product lead, and finally into head of product as they show they can set strategy and lead teams. Some go on to become chief product officers.
