Head of Design

As a head of design, you lead a company's design team and set the vision for how its products look and feel. Day to day, you guide designers, review their work, and make sure everything is consistent, high-quality, and easy for people to use. You define the principles the team follows, hire and grow designers, and represent design in big company decisions so the user experience gets a seat at the table. You spend your time coaching your team, reviewing work, meeting with product and engineering leaders, and shaping the overall direction of design. This is a senior role built on years of design experience. Many people have a bachelor's degree in design, human-computer interaction, or a related field, but a strong portfolio and track record matter most. You typically spend years as a designer and then a design lead, mastering the craft and learning to guide others, before heading a team. Along the way, you build skills in leadership, strategy, and communication. Staying current with design tools and trends is part of the job at every level. Heads of design work at tech companies, design agencies, and any business where product experience is a priority, from startups to large corporations. As companies realize good design drives success, these leadership roles have grown. Most people start as a product or visual designer, move up to senior designer and design manager, and finally into head of design as they show they can lead teams and shape strategy. Some go on to become chief design officers. This career fits you if you have both a strong eye for design and a talent for leading people. You'll do well if you can give clear, kind feedback, think strategically about products, and communicate design's value to non-designers. Empathy for users and for your own team both matter, along with the confidence to make big creative calls.
