Technology as a strategic driver of business.

You lead the technology strategy of an entire organization. As a chief information officer, or CIO, you decide which systems, software, and infrastructure the company runs on, and you make sure technology serves the business rather than getting in its way. You spend your days meeting with other executives, setting priorities, managing budgets, overseeing IT teams, and weighing decisions about cybersecurity, data, and new tools. You translate between the technical world and the business world, making sure investments in technology actually help the company grow and stay secure. This is a top leadership role that takes many years to reach. You'll usually start with a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, then build deep experience in IT, software, or engineering. Community college is an affordable way to begin building technical skills before transferring. Many CIOs later earn an MBA or a master's degree to sharpen their business and leadership abilities, and certifications in project management or security can help along the way. Above all, this role rewards a long track record of leading technology well. CIOs work at large corporations, hospitals, universities, government agencies, and growing companies that depend on technology to compete. Nearly every organization of size now needs someone who can align technology with strategy. Most people climb a long ladder: developer or analyst, then team lead, IT manager, director, and eventually the executive seat.
