As a database administrator, or DBA, you keep an organization's databases running smoothly, securely, and fast. You set up and maintain the systems that store critical data, make sure they perform well, protect them with backups and security, and fix problems when they arise. Day to day, you tune queries so applications run faster, manage user access, plan for disaster recovery, monitor for issues, and keep data safe and available around the clock. You work with both traditional databases and newer NoSQL systems. Most DBAs hold a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, but community college programs, certifications, and hands-on experience can also get you in. Certifications from database vendors like Oracle and Microsoft, or in cloud databases from AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, are highly valued. Core skills include SQL, understanding how databases work under the hood, backup and recovery, security, and increasingly cloud database services. You will find DBAs across almost every industry, from finance and healthcare to tech, retail, and government, since nearly every organization depends on databases. Careers often start in an IT support, junior DBA, or developer role, then grow into full DBA, senior DBA, and can branch into database architecture, data engineering, or cloud infrastructure as you specialize.
