API Gateway Engineer

Managing APIs at scale

As an API Gateway Engineer, you sit at the front door of every app a company runs. Your day is spent making sure that when a phone, a website, or another service asks for data, the request gets routed to the right place, checked for the right permissions, and slowed down if someone is hammering the system. You configure gateways like Kong, AWS API Gateway, or Apigee, set up authentication and rate limits, and watch dashboards that show traffic flowing through in real time. When something spikes or breaks at 2 a.m., you are often the person who traces where the request got stuck. You work closely with backend teams, security folks, and site reliability engineers. Most people reach this role through a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering, but that is not the only path. Plenty of engineers start at a community college, transfer to a four-year program, or teach themselves and prove it through projects. Cloud certifications from AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure carry real weight here because gateways usually live in the cloud. Coding bootcamps can get you in the door for a junior backend role, and from there you specialize. What matters most is that you can actually build and debug web services. Demand for this work shows up wherever companies run software at scale: tech firms, banks, retailers, streaming platforms, and government contractors. You will find these jobs concentrated in tech hubs but increasingly available remotely across the country. Careers usually start with a general backend or DevOps role, then narrow toward API and platform work as you get comfortable with networking, security, and traffic patterns. Internships and open-source contributions are a strong way in while you are still learning. This job fits you if you like systems more than flashy interfaces, and if a clean, well-labeled diagram gives you a small thrill. You should enjoy solving puzzles under pressure, care about the details other people skip, and feel comfortable when a hundred things are talking to each other at once.
