As a geneticist, you study genes and DNA to understand how traits and diseases are passed from one generation to the next. Day to day, you might run experiments in a lab, analyze genetic data on a computer, help diagnose inherited conditions, or research new treatments tailored to a person's genes. You use microscopes, sequencing machines, and software to read and interpret genetic information. Depending on your job, you might work alongside other scientists, doctors, or patients and their families. Becoming a geneticist takes a lot of education. You start with a bachelor's degree in biology, genetics, or a related science, then usually earn a graduate degree, often a master's or a PhD, for research roles. If you want to work directly with patients as a genetic counselor or a medical geneticist, additional training, certification, or medical school and licensing may be required. Internships and lab experience during school are key to learning the hands-on skills and figuring out which part of the field fits you. Geneticists work in university and hospital research labs, biotech and pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, and clinics that offer genetic testing and counseling. As DNA testing and personalized medicine grow, so do the opportunities. Many people start as research assistants or lab technicians, then take on more independent projects as they earn advanced degrees, eventually leading their own research or clinical work. This career fits you if you're fascinated by how life works at its smallest level and love asking questions and finding answers. You'll do well if you're patient, careful, and comfortable with detailed lab work and data. Strong science and math skills matter, along with the curiosity to keep digging when experiments don't go as planned.
