Head of Customer Success

Customer success strategy at scale.

As a head of customer success, you lead the team that makes sure customers get real value from a company's product and stick around for the long term. Day to day, you set the strategy for how the company keeps and grows its customers, lead and coach the customer success team, and track key signs of how healthy each customer relationship is. You step in on important accounts, work with sales and product teams to solve problems, and focus on reducing the number of customers who leave. You spend your time in meetings, reviewing data, and guiding your team. This is a leadership role you grow into. Many people have a bachelor's degree in business, communications, or a related field, and some add an MBA, but experience matters most. You typically spend years in customer success or account management roles, learning how to build relationships and solve customer problems, before leading a team. Along the way, you develop skills in coaching, using customer data, and working across departments. Certifications in customer success or leadership can help you stand out. This role is especially common at software and subscription companies, where keeping customers happy month after month is the heart of the business, but many industries now invest in customer success. You'll find these jobs at tech companies, service providers, and growing startups. Most people start as a customer success manager or in support or account management, then move up to team lead and eventually head of the department as they prove they can drive retention and growth. This career fits you if you love helping people succeed and enjoy leading a team toward a shared goal. You'll do well if you're a strong communicator, comfortable with data, and good at building relationships and solving problems. Empathy for customers, combined with a focus on results, is the sweet spot. Leadership skills matter, since you'll coach and motivate others. If you like the mix of relationships, strategy, and results, and you want to lead in a growing field, becoming head of customer success is a strong goal to aim for.
