As a criminal defense attorney, you represent people accused of crimes and protect their right to a fair defense. You meet with clients, investigate the facts, review evidence, negotiate with prosecutors, and argue cases in court, from small charges to serious felonies. Day to day, you might interview witnesses, file motions, advise a client on their options, or stand before a judge and jury. Your role is to make sure the government proves its case and your client's rights are respected. Becoming an attorney in the United States takes a long, structured path. You earn a bachelor's degree, take the LSAT, then complete three years of law school to get a Juris Doctor. After that you must pass your state's bar exam to become licensed to practice. Many defense attorneys gain early experience through internships, clerkships, or work at a public defender's office. Trial experience is what really sharpens the craft. Criminal defense attorneys work at public defender offices, private law firms, and their own practices, and every jurisdiction needs them. Many new lawyers start as public defenders or prosecutors to get courtroom reps fast, then move into private practice or specialize. Careers can grow from associate to partner, or into building a solo or boutique firm known for a particular type of case.
