As a family and estate lawyer, you help people through some of the most personal legal moments of their lives. On the family side, you handle divorces, child custody and support, prenuptial agreements, and adoptions. On the estate side, you help clients plan what happens to their money and property after they die, drafting wills and trusts and guiding families through probate, the court process of settling an estate. Day to day, you meet with clients, listen to emotional situations, draft legal documents, negotiate agreements, and sometimes argue cases in court. You need both legal skill and a good deal of compassion, since your clients are often going through grief, conflict, or major life change. The path is long but clear. You'll earn a bachelor's degree in any subject, then complete law school for a Juris Doctor (J.D.), and pass the bar exam in the state where you want to practice. During law school, taking courses in family law, wills and trusts, and estate planning, and doing internships or clinics in these areas, builds the specific skills you'll need. Some lawyers also earn certifications in estate planning to deepen their expertise. Most family and estate lawyers work in small to mid-size law firms, and many eventually run their own practice, since this work suits solo and small-firm settings well. Demand is steady everywhere, because people everywhere marry, divorce, raise children, and pass on what they own. New lawyers often start as associates handling parts of cases under supervision, then take on their own clients as they gain experience and confidence. This path fits you if you want a legal career centered on people rather than corporations. You'll thrive if you're a strong communicator, a careful writer, and emotionally steady enough to guide clients through stressful situations. Empathy, discretion, negotiation skill, and attention to detail all matter greatly.
