Culture as a diplomatic instrument

As a cultural attaché, you represent your country abroad through the world of culture. Based at an embassy or consulate, you promote arts, education, and exchange, organizing events, supporting artists and scholars, and building bridges between your country and the one you are posted in. Day to day, you might plan a film festival or concert, coordinate educational exchange programs, host visiting artists, and use culture as a way to strengthen international relationships and mutual understanding. In the United States, this work usually happens through the Foreign Service at the State Department, often in a public diplomacy track. You typically need at least a bachelor's degree, and many candidates study international relations, foreign languages, history, or the arts, with graduate degrees common. Becoming a Foreign Service officer involves a competitive exam and assessment process. Speaking foreign languages, living or studying abroad, and experience in the arts or education all strengthen your path. These roles sit within the U.S. Foreign Service and related government agencies and cultural organizations, with postings at embassies and consulates around the world. Careers usually begin as a Foreign Service officer rotating through assignments, gradually taking on more responsibility in public and cultural diplomacy.
