You will need a bachelor's degree, then a master's in marriage and family therapy or a related counseling field, followed by supervised clinical hours, usually a couple thousand, and passing a state licensing exam to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Requirements vary by state, so it is worth checking your state's board early. Ongoing continuing education keeps your license active. You will find these therapists in private practice, community mental health centers, hospitals, family services agencies, and schools. Many build a private practice over time, sometimes alongside teletherapy. Careers usually begin with supervised work as an associate while you accumulate licensing hours, then move into full licensure and independent practice, with options to specialize in areas like trauma, addiction, or child and adolescent work.
