As a child psychologist, you help children work through emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges. Day to day, you meet with kids and their families, using play, conversation, and activities to understand what a child is feeling and going through. You assess development, provide therapy, and teach coping skills, often working with anxiety, trauma, behavioral issues, and learning or developmental differences. You work in clinics, schools, hospitals, or private practices, and you partner closely with parents and teachers to support each child. To become a child psychologist, you earn a bachelor's degree in psychology or a related field, then a graduate degree, usually a doctorate such as a PhD or PsyD in clinical or school psychology. Your training includes supervised clinical hours working with children. After that, you become licensed in your state, which requires passing a national exam and meeting supervised-experience requirements. Some roles, like school psychologist, may require a specialist degree rather than a full doctorate. You'll find child psychologists at private practices, hospitals, schools, community mental health centers, and clinics across the country. Many start in supervised roles after graduate school and build their experience and caseload over time. As awareness of children's mental health grows, demand for specialists who work with kids is strong. With experience, you can develop a specialty, open a private practice, or move into research or teaching.
