Operating on the heart

As a cardiovascular surgeon, you perform operations on the heart and blood vessels, from bypass surgery to valve repairs and aneurysm treatment. Day to day, you consult with patients, plan complex procedures, and spend long hours in the operating room doing delicate, high-stakes work. Before and after surgery, you monitor patients closely, often in intensive care, and coordinate with a large team of nurses, anesthesiologists, and other specialists. It's one of the most demanding roles in medicine, requiring focus and steady hands. The training is among the longest in medicine. You earn a bachelor's degree, take the MCAT, and complete four years of medical school for an MD or DO. Then comes a general surgery residency of about five years, followed by a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship of two or three more. You pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination, earn your state license, and become board certified in cardiothoracic surgery. It's a decade or more of training, reflecting the responsibility the work carries. You'll find cardiovascular surgeons at hospitals, academic medical centers, and specialized heart institutes, usually in larger cities where complex surgery is concentrated. New surgeons typically join a hospital or surgical group after fellowship, building experience with senior colleagues before leading the most complex cases. Because heart disease remains common, skilled heart surgeons are highly valued. Many also teach or contribute to research advancing the field.
