As an interventional cardiologist, you are a heart doctor who treats blocked and diseased arteries without open-heart surgery. Using thin tubes called catheters threaded through a small opening, usually in the wrist or groin, you perform procedures like angioplasty and place stents to open clogged arteries and restore blood flow. You often work in emergencies, such as heart attacks, where fast action saves lives, as well as scheduled procedures. You spend time in the catheterization lab, in clinics seeing patients, and coordinating with cardiac surgeons, nurses, and technologists. The training is among the longest in medicine. You earn a bachelor's degree with premed courses, take the MCAT, and complete four years of medical school for an MD or DO. Then you finish a three-year residency in internal medicine, a general cardiology fellowship of about three years, and an additional interventional cardiology fellowship of one to two more years. You must pass licensing exams, hold a medical license in your state, and earn board certifications. It takes well over a decade after high school, but it prepares you for high-stakes, hands-on work. The jobs are found at hospitals, cardiac centers, and academic medical centers, especially those with catheterization labs and emergency heart care. Because heart disease is one of the most common serious health problems, demand is steady across the country. Careers typically begin in a hospital or group practice after fellowship, then grow into leadership of a cath lab or cardiology program, teaching, or research on new devices and techniques. This career fits you if you thrive under pressure and enjoy precise, hands-on procedures with immediate results. You need excellent fine motor skills, quick decision-making, and the calm to handle life-or-death emergencies.
