As an endocrinologist, you are a doctor who specializes in hormones and the glands that make them. You diagnose and treat conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, and problems with the adrenal and pituitary glands, along with issues involving growth, metabolism, and reproductive health. Since hormone problems can be subtle, you rely heavily on lab tests alongside talking with and examining patients. Much of your work involves managing long-term conditions, so you build ongoing relationships with patients. You usually work in clinics, hospitals, or private practice. This is a long medical path. You start with a bachelor's degree, often science-focused, then complete four years of medical school. After that comes a residency in internal medicine, usually three years, followed by a fellowship in endocrinology of two to three more years. You must pass licensing exams and earn board certification. A community college can cover your early coursework.
