As an emergency medicine physician, you are the doctor people count on in their scariest moments. You work in the emergency room, treating everything from broken bones and bad infections to heart attacks, strokes, and major accidents. Becoming an emergency physician takes many years of training. You start with a bachelor's degree, often focused on science, then attend four years of medical school. You begin your independent career after residency, often building experience in a hospital emergency department, and can later move into leadership roles, teaching, or specialized areas like trauma or emergency medical services.
