As a cardiologist, you diagnose and treat problems of the heart and blood vessels. Day to day, you see patients with chest pain, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, and heart disease, ordering and interpreting tests like electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, stress tests, and catheterizations. You work in hospitals, clinics, and heart centers, and some cardiologists perform procedures to open blocked arteries or implant pacemakers. You spend your days examining patients, reading results, and making decisions that can save lives. Becoming a cardiologist is a long road in the United States. You earn a bachelor's degree, take the MCAT, and complete four years of medical school to become an MD or DO. Then you finish a three-year residency in internal medicine, followed by a cardiology fellowship of three or more years. Along the way you pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination, get licensed in your state, and become board certified. It's a demanding path, but each step builds the expertise the job requires. You'll find cardiologists at hospitals, private practices, academic medical centers, and specialized heart clinics across the country. New cardiologists often join a group practice or hospital system after fellowship, then build their patient base and reputation over time. Because heart disease is so common, cardiologists are needed in cities and rural areas alike. As you gain experience, you can subspecialize further in areas like electrophysiology or interventional cardiology.
