You handle the paperwork and rules behind importing and exporting, including customs documents, tariff classifications, shipping arrangements, and trade regulations. You track shipments, calculate duties and taxes, and make sure everything complies with the laws of each country involved. Your days are spent in trade software and spreadsheets, coordinating with freight forwarders, customs brokers, suppliers, and internal teams to solve the many small problems that come up in global shipping. Most analysts hold a bachelor's degree in international business, supply chain management, logistics, or a related field, though some enter with an associate degree plus experience. Knowing trade terms like Incoterms, understanding tariff systems, and being comfortable with detailed compliance work are key. Certifications in international trade, customs compliance, or supply chain can strengthen your resume. Some professionals pursue a customs broker license, which requires passing a federal exam, to take on more responsibility. Employers include manufacturers, importers and exporters, retailers, freight forwarders, and customs brokerage firms, and demand tends to concentrate near ports, major airports, and border regions, as well as in companies that source or sell internationally. Careers usually start in a coordinator or junior analyst role, then grow toward senior analyst, compliance specialist, or trade manager as you master the rules and build a network across the supply chain. This path fits you if you like detail, structure, and solving logistical puzzles with real deadlines. You will do well if you are organized, careful, and calm under pressure, since a small paperwork error can delay a shipment or trigger a penalty. Curiosity about how the global economy connects and comfort working with people in different time zones and countries help a lot.
