As an endodontist, you are a dental specialist who saves teeth by treating the soft tissue inside them, called the pulp. Your main work is root canal treatment, where you carefully remove infected or damaged tissue, clean the inside of the tooth, and seal it so the patient can keep their natural tooth. You also handle complex retreatments and small surgeries near the tooth root, often using microscopes and advanced imaging for precision. You spend your days performing detailed procedures and easing patients' fears, usually in a specialized dental office. Becoming an endodontist takes years of focused study. You start with a bachelor's degree, then complete dental school to become a general dentist, which usually takes four years. After that, you finish a specialty residency in endodontics, typically two to three more years of advanced training. You must pass licensing exams to practice, and specializing requires additional certification. A community college can cover part of your early education before you transfer. There is steady demand for endodontists because many people need root canal treatment, and general dentists often refer these complex cases to specialists. Opportunities exist in specialty practices, group dental offices, and dental schools across the country. Many endodontists work in or eventually own a private specialty practice, and some also teach or take referrals from a network of general dentists in their area.
