Industrial Automation Engineer

It automates factories and industrial processes.

You are the person who teaches factories and machines to run themselves. As an industrial automation engineer, you design, program, and maintain the systems that automate production, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), SCADA monitoring software, sensors, and industrial robots. Day to day, you might write control code, wire up equipment, troubleshoot a production line that has stopped, or redesign a process to make it faster and safer. You split your time between an office, where you plan and program, and the factory floor, where you test and fix things in the real world. Most automation engineers earn a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, or automation engineering. For technician-level roles, an associate degree in automation or industrial technology from a community college is a common entry point. Internships and co-op programs give you crucial hands-on experience, and manufacturer certifications on specific control platforms help you stand out. Because the technology keeps evolving, ongoing learning is part of the job. In the United States, the jobs are with manufacturers in industries like automotive, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and electronics, as well as with system integrators and the companies that build automation equipment. Careers often start in a technician or junior engineer role and grow toward senior engineer, project lead, or controls engineering management as you master more systems. This career fits you if you like both machines and code and enjoy figuring out why something is not working. You are systematic, safety-minded, and curious about how physical processes actually run. You are comfortable getting your hands dirty on the floor and then sitting down to refine a program.
