You blend hands-on investigation with careful writing, working with lawyers, insurers, and other engineers. This role builds on a foundation as an engineer, usually a civil engineer. You start with a bachelor's degree in engineering, and you can begin at a community college before transferring. Gaining real engineering experience is essential, and many experts earn a Professional Engineer license, which requires experience and passing exams. Specialized training in forensic or expert engineering, plus a strong understanding of building codes and legal processes, prepares you to give opinions that hold up under scrutiny. Demand comes from law firms, insurance companies, construction disputes, and government agencies, so opportunities exist wherever there are buildings, projects, and the occasional problem, which is everywhere. Many experts work at specialized consulting firms or run their own practice, taking cases referred by lawyers and insurers. You typically build years of engineering experience first, then move into expert and forensic work, growing your reputation case by case.
