Bridge and Viaduct Engineer

As a bridge and viaduct engineer, you design and oversee the structures that carry roads and railways over rivers, valleys, and other obstacles. Day to day, you run structural calculations, create detailed drawings and computer models, and check that a design can safely handle traffic, wind, earthquakes, and decades of wear. You split your time between the office and construction sites, where you inspect work, solve problems, and make sure everything is built to plan. You collaborate with other engineers, contractors, and government agencies on projects that can take years. To become a bridge engineer in the United States, you earn a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering from an accredited program. After graduation you pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to become an engineer-in-training, gain about four years of supervised experience, and then pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam to earn your Professional Engineer license, which is required to sign off on public projects. Many bridge engineers go on to earn a master's degree in structural engineering to deepen their expertise. Licensing rules are set by each state.
