To become a chemical engineer, you earn a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from an accredited program. Many engineers pursue a Professional Engineer license by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, gaining supervised experience, and later passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam, which each state oversees. Some go on to earn a master's degree or PhD for research and advanced roles. Internships and co-op programs during college give you valuable hands-on experience and help you land your first job. You'll find chemical engineers at petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food, energy, and manufacturing companies, as well as in environmental and consulting work. Most start as a process or junior engineer, learning the plant and its processes before taking on more responsibility. Industrial regions and companies across the country hire chemical engineers to design and improve production. With experience, you can advance to project engineer, plant manager, or specialized technical roles.
