You are the person who helps entire schools and school systems support students better. While a school psychologist often focuses on individual students, as an institutional educational psychologist you work more at the systems level, designing programs, training teachers, and shaping policies that make learning environments more effective and inclusive. Day to day, you might build intervention programs for struggling learners, coach educators on strategies that work, advise administrators on inclusive practices, and use data to see what is helping and what is not. You spend your time in schools, districts, and meetings where big decisions about education get made. This is an advanced, licensed field. After a bachelor's degree, you complete a master's, specialist (Ed.S.), or doctoral program in educational or school psychology, including a supervised internship. You then earn state certification or licensure to practice, and many professionals pursue national certification through the National Association of School Psychologists. The training combines psychology, education, and research methods. In the United States, these roles exist in school districts, state education agencies, universities, and nonprofit organizations focused on education. Some professionals also consult for multiple schools or work on research and program evaluation. Careers can grow toward lead psychologist, program director, or roles shaping education policy and teacher training. This career fits you if you care about education as a whole system, not just one classroom at a time. You are analytical enough to interpret data and design programs, but also collaborative and patient, since real change in schools takes time and buy-in from many people.
