You lead the academic side of a college or university, overseeing the programs, faculty, and standards that shape what students actually learn. Day to day you set educational policy, guide deans and department chairs, manage accreditation, and make decisions about new degrees, hiring, and curriculum. Much of your time goes to meetings, budgets, and long-range planning, balancing the ambitions of faculty against the realities of enrollment and funding. You answer to the president or chancellor and represent the institution's academic reputation to accreditors and the public. To get here, you climb through academia over many years. You almost always hold a doctorate and a record of teaching and research, then move into leadership as a department chair, then dean, before reaching a provost or vice-president-level role. There is no single certificate for this job; it is earned through experience, trust, and a track record of running programs well. Some leaders sharpen their management skills with executive education in higher education administration along the way. The market is every college and university, from small community colleges to large research universities, plus some online and for-profit institutions. These senior roles are relatively few, so the path is competitive and usually reached in mid to late career. People typically arrive after a decade or more of teaching, research, and progressively larger administrative responsibilities. This career fits you if you care deeply about education and enjoy leading people rather than doing the research yourself. You need diplomacy to navigate faculty politics, comfort with budgets and data, and the patience to move a large institution slowly toward a goal.
