Movement is life in design.

As an animator, you bring characters, objects, and worlds to life through movement. You create the motion you see in animated films, video games, commercials, and online videos, whether by drawing frames, sculpting and posing 3D models, or moving physical objects for stop-motion. You start from scripts and storyboards, then design how a character walks, reacts, and shows emotion. Your days are spent at a computer with animation software, refining scenes shot by shot, and working closely with directors, designers, and other artists on a team. Many animators earn a degree in animation, digital media, or fine arts, and community colleges offer strong, affordable programs that build both artistic and technical skills. What employers care about most is your demo reel, a short showcase of your best animation. You build that through school projects, personal work, and internships. Mastering industry animation software is essential, and a solid understanding of movement, timing, and storytelling sets great animators apart from the rest. Work is found at animation and film studios, video game companies, advertising agencies, and increasingly with streaming platforms and online content creators. Some animators work in-house while many freelance on projects. The field is creative and competitive, so a strong reel and a personal style really help. You usually start as a junior animator on a specific type of shot, then take on more complex work, and can grow into senior animator, lead, or art director roles over time. This path fits you if you are creative, patient, and love the idea of making still images move. You need artistic skill, a feel for timing and motion, and the persistence to polish scenes until they feel just right. Attention to detail and the ability to take feedback matter, since animation is highly collaborative and iterative.
