Movement as a universal language

As a dancer, you express stories, emotions, and ideas through movement, performing for audiences on stage, on screen, or at live events. Depending on your path, you might dance with a company, in musicals, in music videos, at concerts, or in commercials. Day to day, your life revolves around training and rehearsal: taking class to keep your technique sharp, learning choreography, rehearsing for hours, and performing. It is physically demanding work that asks a lot of your body and your discipline. You do not need a college degree to be a dancer, but you do need serious training, usually starting young and continuing for years. Many dancers train at studios, conservatories, or through college dance programs, and some attend performing arts high schools. Community colleges and universities offer dance degrees that combine technique with choreography and dance history. Auditions, not diplomas, are how most dancers get work, so building strong technique and a reel or resume of performances matters most. You will find dancers in dance companies, theater and musical productions, film and television, theme parks, cruise ships, and the commercial world of music and advertising, with major hubs in cities known for entertainment. Careers are often built audition by audition and can include teaching or choreographing on the side. Because dancing is physically intense, many dancers plan a second act, in choreography, teaching, or arts direction, as their performing years wind down. This career fits you if you are passionate about movement and willing to work incredibly hard for it. You will thrive if you are disciplined, resilient, and able to handle rejection at auditions without losing heart, and if you take care of your body like the instrument it is. People who feel most alive when they are dancing, who love performing, and who can commit to constant training tend to pursue this despite its challenges, because for them nothing else compares.
