Movement that heals

As a dance/movement therapist, you use movement and the body as tools for healing. You help people work through trauma, anxiety, depression, and difficulty expressing emotions, guiding them to explore feelings through movement rather than words alone. Day to day, you lead individual or group sessions, observe how people move, and design activities that help them build self-awareness, release tension, and connect with others. You might work with children, older adults, people in recovery, or those with disabilities. This is a credentialed field in the United States. You typically need a master's degree in dance/movement therapy from a program approved by the American Dance Therapy Association, or a related master's plus specific coursework. You earn the Registered Dance/Movement Therapist credential through supervised clinical training. A background in dance and psychology helps, and many people start with a bachelor's in either field, sometimes beginning at a community college before transferring. You will find dance/movement therapists in hospitals, mental health clinics, schools, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and private practice. It is a specialized field, so roles may take some searching, and many therapists combine it with related work in counseling or the arts. Careers usually begin with supervised clinical hours, then grow into independent practice, program leadership, or teaching the next generation of therapists.
