Growing metro areas and regions dealing with rapid change tend to have the most demand. Careers usually start as a junior planner or design assistant analyzing data and supporting projects, then grow toward leading plans, managing public engagement, and guiding major developments. This career fits you if you care about how cities feel to walk through and who gets to thrive in them. You should enjoy blending creative design with research and public conversation, and be patient with the slow, negotiated pace of shaping public places. If you like solving big, human problems, listening to many voices, and imagining how a place could be better for everyone who uses it, urban planning offers work that literally reshapes the world around you.
