You are the person who designs the spaces where people live, work, and gather. As an interior designer, you go beyond decorating to plan how a space actually functions, considering layout, lighting, materials, safety, and accessibility as well as beauty. Day to day, you create floor plans and drawings, select finishes and furnishings, work within building codes, and collaborate with architects, contractors, and clients to bring a vision to life. You might design homes, offices, restaurants, hotels, or hospitals, balancing how a space looks with how well it serves the people who use it. Most interior designers earn a bachelor's degree in interior design, ideally from a program accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. Many go on to pass the NCIDQ exam, the main professional credential in the field, and some states require designers to be registered or licensed to use the title or work on certain projects. Internships and building a strong portfolio during school are essential for landing that first job. In the United States, interior designers work at design firms, architecture firms, and companies in retail, hospitality, and healthcare, and many eventually run their own practices. Careers usually begin in a junior or assistant designer role, learning how projects come together, and grow toward lead designer, project manager, and firm ownership or specialization in areas like commercial or healthcare design. This career fits you if you are creative but also practical, able to imagine a beautiful space and then solve the real-world problems of building it. You have an eye for detail, enjoy working with people, and can juggle the needs of clients, budgets, and building rules at the same time.
