You'll typically start with a bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or a related field, then gain experience in HR roles before stepping into management. Community college is an affordable starting point, and internships help you break in. Certifications like the SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR are widely respected, and some managers pursue a master's degree to advance further. A track record of handling people matters well is what ultimately earns the role. HR managers work in companies of nearly every size and industry, as well as nonprofits, government, and staffing firms. Almost every organization with a workforce needs someone to lead its people function. Many people start as an HR analyst or generalist, grow into a specialist or supervisor role, and advance to HR manager, then potentially HR director or vice president of people. This fits you if you care about people, communicate well, and can make fair decisions under pressure. You'll need strong leadership, emotional intelligence, knowledge of employment practices, and the discretion to handle sensitive matters.
