As a chief operating officer, or COO, you make sure a company actually runs day to day, turning big strategy into smooth operations. While the chief executive often focuses on vision and the outside world, you keep the inside working, overseeing teams, processes, and resources so goals get met. Day to day you monitor how different departments perform, solve operational problems, improve systems and workflows, manage budgets and people, and report to the chief executive and the board. You are a leader and a problem solver at the highest level, connecting many parts of the business and making decisions that affect the whole organization. This is a senior executive role, so it is the result of a long career rather than a starting point. Many COOs hold a bachelor's degree in business, management, or a related field, and a good number earn an MBA or advanced degree, though experience matters most. You build toward this role over many years, gaining deep knowledge of how businesses operate by leading teams, managing projects, and running departments. Proving you can deliver results and lead people at scale is what opens the door. Companies across every industry have operations to run, so COOs work at startups, large corporations, hospitals, nonprofits, and more, usually where the business is headquartered. The path typically climbs through operations, management, or a specific function like finance or supply chain, into director and vice president roles, and eventually to COO. From here, some go on to become a chief executive officer. This career fits you if you are a natural leader who loves organizing people and processes to get things done. You need strong decision making, communication, and problem solving skills, plus the ability to see the big picture and the details at once.
